Educate young people about the dangers of two-wheelers

As part of the Homeland Security Days, a session to raise awareness of the dangers of two-wheelers was organized yesterday morning at the lycée polyvalent des Iles du Nord.

This annual meeting is above all intended for the entire population to discuss with the professionals who ensure our safety. Police officers, gendarmes, firefighters and first aid associations go beyond their daily activities to talk about their profession. The motorized brigade of Saint-Martin (BMO), represented by Chief Warrant Officer Schalbretter and Constable Schembre, intervened yesterday morning at the school. The objective of this meeting: to enlighten young people on the real dangers of traveling on a two-wheeler. On the island, especially at Sandy Ground and Quartier d'Orléans, many mopeds easily adopt risky behavior. And this risk-taking can be fatal to them at any time on the road. Between inexperience and overconfidence, the mixture is often formidable.

The numbers speak for themselves

On a motorbike or scooter, 7 out of 10 users have already fallen, and among them more than 4 out of 10 have been more or less seriously injured. Experience does not guarantee against falling: the more you ride, the more you risk falling, so almost 80% of those who have fallen have been driving for more than 10 years. Figures to ponder.

Images and a shocking testimony to shock conscience: this was the objective of the intervention of Jean-Christ Delogu, victim of a serious accident on his two-wheeler at the end of his work: “By wanting to avoid a young girl when she got off the bus, I hit this famous bus with full force. According to witnesses present at the scene, the shock was violent. Unconscious, I woke up in my hospital room with a facial fracture. Without wearing my helmet, I will not be here with you today (note: yesterday morning) ”. _AF
