The Prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin has just released road safety figures for the first 8 months of the year.
Since January 2016, five people have died in a road accident in Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy. All had used alcohol and / or narcotics!
Numbers :
• 22 accidents (28 in 2015)
• 5 dead (4 in 2015)
• 14 hospitalized injured (33 in 2015)
To remember :
- The 5 dead (3 in Saint-Barthélemy, 2 in Saint-Martin) had consumed alcohol and / or drugs
- 80% of accidents involve two wheels
- More than half of accidents are linked to alcohol consumption
Nationally, almost one in three people killed on the road is killed in an accident with a positive alcohol level. Young people aged 18-24 are the most severely affected age group: they represent 40% of those killed in an accident involving alcohol. On average, each day, a young person is killed in an accident with a positive alcohol level.
There is therefore no inevitability, behaviors must change, it is a collective awareness.
