Road safety: The phone while driving can cost you your driving license!

0

The telephone while driving may be worth an immediate driver's license withdrawal when another offense is committed at the same time. It is one of the 18 measures presented by the Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe to fight against road insecurity. What will happen to Saint Martin?

As had been anticipated, the telephone while driving will soon cost drivers' licenses. The police can "withhold the driver's license" and the vehicle of an offender who has committed an offense (speeding, lack of flashing light, refusal of priority ...), announced the Prime Minister, Edouard Philippe. The motorist then finds himself directly unable to drive and a subsequent procedure will decide on the restitution, suspension or withdrawal of the license.

This measure will be applied from 2019. Today, being caught using your phone while driving is liable to a fine of 135 euros and a withdrawal of 3 points, which can be accumulated up to eight points in the event of other simultaneous offenses. According to the government's road safety site, "only 51% of drivers consider the telephone to be a real danger, [when it] is however responsible for 1 in 10 personal injury accidents".

Also new in terms of alcohol level. Anti-start breathalyzers will be compulsory from 2018 for repeat offenders.

It remains to be seen now whether these measures will also be applied in Saint-Martin? _AF
