Road safety: Drivers and passengers of two-wheelers: gloves must be worn, including in saint-martin!

In Metropolitan France as in Saint-Martin, the drivers and passengers of two-wheelers are concerned. They are liable in the event of non-compliance to a fine of 68 euros and the loss of one point on the license.

Since November 20, motorcyclists will no longer be able to drive with their bare hands or with gloves not certified to European CE standards. This obligation has just been validated by a decree published in the Official Journal on Tuesday, September 20, 2016.

Which two-wheelers are affected?

Bikers such as drivers of scooters, mopeds, quads and motor tricycles must be equipped, on pain of exposing themselves to a third class fine (fine of 68 euros reduced to 45 euros if paid within 15 days) and have a point removed from their driver's license.

The passenger will also have to pay a third class fine.

What types of gloves will be allowed?

Decree 2016-1232 specifies that compulsory gloves must comply with the regulations on personal protective equipment (PPE). These gloves are recognizable by the presence of a CE label.

Road Safety emphasizes that hand injuries are very common since the first reflex is to put them forward in the event of projection on the ground.

In an accident, with thick gloves, hand injuries are reduced or avoided in 95% of cases for motorcyclists and 87% of cases for mopeds, according to a MAIDS study (Motorcycle Accident In Depth Study).

It remains to be seen now if this new decree will be applied as it should be, in Saint-Martin… _AF
