SECURITY: Number of auto thefts continues to drop

0

In the first four months of the year, 73 automobiles were stolen, according to figures released by the Interior Ministry. In March and April, the Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy gendarmerie company recorded less than 20 incidents per month (17 and 16 respectively), a level that had not been reached since the period February-August 2017. A With the exception of the months of April and May 2020 - i.e. during confinement - 13 flights had been listed.

Almost half as many cars were stolen this year compared to 2019 over the same period (January to April). And 2,5 times less compared to last year. In 2020, half of the vehicles stolen had been between January and April. While more than one car was stolen per day in 2019 and 2020, this year the ratio is 0,6.

This is explained by the dismantling of sectors by the gendarmes who created a special working group as well as by a drop in rental cars in service, which were one of the main targets.

Regarding two wheels, 8 and 5 flights were postponed in March and April against 16 and 18 in January and February. In the first four months of the year, 47 two-wheelers were reported stolen compared to 43 in the previous four months (October to December 2020). Last year, 151 two-wheelers were stolen, 103 in 2019 and 130 in 2018.
