SECURITY: The gendarmerie will strengthen controls at Sandy Ground

0

Since the events of December 2019, the feeling that Sandy Ground is becoming a “no-go zone” has grown. Wheelies and runs are more and more frequent, motorists have the impression that the gendarmes rarely intervene. A finding that the squadron commander, Stephan Basso, refutes.

If he admits that the situation has been tense in the neighborhood since last December, he disputes the non-presence of the gendarmes. He also announces an upcoming strengthening of road checks in the neighborhood. "Sandy Ground remains a concern, but the right means must be found to intervene", comments the commander. Like his predecessors, he explains that certain operations are delicate, in particular those consisting in stopping the pilots of two-wheelers in wheelies which could endanger the lives of the gendarmes and the pilots.

Stephan Basso also declares that several patrols are carried out regularly. And in order to strengthen their effectiveness, he would like to be able to work with neighborhood associations and the territorial police. If the security of people and property is a competence of the State, and therefore of the gendarmerie here in Saint-Martin, maintaining and ensuring public tranquility is also a task of the territorial police.

In addition, the commander invites residents to testify and report acts of violence in the neighborhood, of which the gendarmes are not aware. "We now have procedures that allow us to remain anonymous when calling 17," says Stephan Basso. (soualigapost.com)
