Getting ready for carnival: a family affair

Like every afternoon since January, a dozen members of Bacchanal Storm are busy in a courtyard in La Savane to make some 80 costumes for the whole troupe. Here, preparing for carnival is a family affair. "We are all more or less from the same family and the majority of us are from Grand Case, which we try to represent" explain the twins Anouska and Anesta, and their cousin Uliska.

Created in 2017 to succeed the Grand Case Cultural Association, Bacchanal Storm is preparing to participate for the third time in the Saint Martin carnival. "My greatest objective is to perpetuate the Caribbean identity" advances Romaric Benjamin, founder and president of the association The Friendly Island Production on which Bacchanal Storm depends.

One of the peculiarities of the troupe is to make its costumes itself. And this, so that the maximum number of people can participate in the parade as it is cheaper than entrusting the manufacturing to a professional.

The Grand Case troupe also relies heavily on the choreography for which training is starting to accelerate. "We are the proud winners of the choreography event since our first participation" recalls the president.
