Sargassum: the State and the COM put in place emergency measures

1

During a press conference at the Collectivity on Friday 4 May, the president of the Collectivity and the prefect Anne Laubiès took stock of the implementation of government emergency measures against sargassum and the means implemented by the COM for cleaning the coast and its short and medium term action plan.

"The government has taken into consideration the extent of the phenomenon and decided to release three million euros to fight against Sargassum in the Antilles-Guyana" announced the prefect. He added that the appointment of a “Sargassum” project manager was in progress. The Ministry of the Interior has also appointed five civil security personnel (two in Guadeloupe, two in Martinique, and one for the northern islands: Lieutenant Steeve Willaume (see photo)). They are responsible for supporting local communities in organizing Sargassum collection and reporting their needs. The State has strengthened forecasting capacities (from three to five days) through satellite images and aerial overflights using drones. The public is informed of the forecasts via the prefecture's website and social networks. The ARS resumed regular sampling to measure the content of hydrogen sulphide fumes (ppm). “Dangerous levels have never been reached in Saint-Martin,” said Pascal Godefroy, director of the regional delegation of the ARS.

This year, the Collectivity has started collecting actions in the bay of Cul de Sac as of April 14th and will be this week in Oyster Pond, in Galion, in Orient Bay, (northern part) “We have already invested 45 euros, "said Daniel Gibbs. The COM has also chosen to renew the green brigades and signed an agreement with the A-SIS Services association. "We are currently writing tenders for the occasional rental of equipment and we are preparing to acquire equipment to intervene very quickly on the surroundings and on all sites thanks to the support of the State" added the president of the COM.

Make it Easy. A tractor with a blade at an angle is the only equipment needed - in a similar motion, like plowing snow on a road. Go straight down the length of the beach several times. FIRST - bring the algae back to the beach about 3-5 yards and let it dry in the sun, where it can also strengthen the beach for future hurricanes. But algae needs to be cleaned often so that it does not accumulate at the water's edge, and becomes a bigger problem requiring large equipment, and algae is a health hazard when kept wet. When the seaweed dries in the sun, there is no great danger to health. Please keep the water's edge clean from algae so that people can walk by the water's edge and the algae is not dangerous. For years, so much time, cost and effort to do it the hardest way. There is no need to keep the algae away - at a distance. This week, great effort once, but the algae will keep coming. So do the easy, cheaper method - a tractor with a blade at an angle - and often.
