Michaël Ohayon is the new Basse-Terre vice-prosecutor seconded to the Saint-Martin prosecution. Magistrate since 2001 and stationed in Saint-Martin for a short time, he explains his priorities to us.
I have been a public prosecutor for fourteen years, I come from the Basque country where I was deputy public prosecutor at the tribunal de grande instance of Bayonne. I have a fairly varied background, I already knew the Caribbean because I was in post a few years ago as a deputy prosecutor in Point-à-Pitre where I spent four years. On this occasion, I discovered functions that really fascinated me, while interacting with Saint-Martin.
• Why did you come to Saint-Martin?
I already knew the local issues. The specificity of the post of magistrate in Saint-Martin - with dual sovereignty and the international cooperation aspect - was very motivating. It is a real challenge. When I arrived, I met my Dutch counterparts. I am on the same line as my predecessor, maintaining all the judicial exchange work. For now I see that it works quite efficiently.
• What are your priorities ?
My priorities are those of the criminal policies of the Basse-Terre prosecutor's office for Saint-Martin, such as the fight against armed robberies, drug trafficking, organized crime, and the fight against attacks on persons.
• What will the creation of the detached chamber of Saint-Martin bring?
When it does exist, there will be a broader transfer of powers compared to what currently exists to provide the most complete legal response possible in Saint-Martin and prevent people from having to move to Basse-Terre. There will be more magistrates, more civil servants, more clerks, this will make it possible to create audiences, and to have much more suitable premises. _KL
