20 horses threatened with euthanasia due to the lack of financial support from the State!

Fredo and Jessica, owners of the Galleon ranch, fear that the horses recovered after Hurricane Irma will be euthanized for lack of financial means to deal with them.

After Hurricane Irma, the prefectural veterinarian of Saint-Martin asked them to recover 20 sick horses that wandered at Cul de Sac. With animal welfare at heart, they obviously agreed, trusting the authorities who verbally promised them financial compensation for the cost of care and maintenance of the horses.

To date, they still take care of these horses, foals have been born, but they have not received any follow-up from the authorities regarding the financial aid promised.

"So these are 20 horses, including 4 stallions and full mares, which represent a considerable additional cost that our various activities do not allow to finance", worries Jessica, who adds that "if we do not receive financial aid from 'here for the next two months we will be forced to hand them over to the authorities instead of euthanizing them at the shelter'.

It should be recalled that the Galion refuge does a considerable amount of work in the public interest since it provides accommodation for abandoned horses that once roamed the streets, entered and ravaged homes and even caused road accidents. Unfortunately, Fredo and Jessica are still awaiting a return from the Prefecture regarding the official obtaining of their refuge status. Without it, they cannot claim any official subsidy which would enable them to perpetuate their activity. However, they carry out the activity of a refuge unofficially since, for example, the gendarmes sometimes come to drop them abandoned, injured, sick or ill-treated horses.

In order to finance the maintenance of their horses, the Ranch du Galion offers horse riding lessons on Wednesdays for children and Saturdays for adults and magnificent horseback rides along the Galion nature reserve which end with a bathing. These activities make it possible to finance the maintenance cost of the fifteen horses they own, but are not sufficient to finance the vaccination, deworming, chiping and shoeing of the 20 additional horses collected after Irma.

Fredo and Jess are now calling on the authorities to help them financially in order to avoid euthanizing the 20 horses for purely economic reasons.
