Protecting humpback whales, a transatlantic issue

A dozen managers of marine protected areas (MPAs) met for the first time in Saint-Martin from May 15 to 17.

During these three days of workshop, they were able to share their knowledge and experiences on the protection of humpback whales in their country (Cape Verde, West Indies, Netherlands, United States, Bermuda…). “What connects us are the migration corridors of humpback whales,” says Romain Renoux, correspondent for the Agoa sanctuary in Saint-Martin. Agoa (marine protected area dedicated to marine mammals in the West Indies) hosted this workshop which took place mainly at the Beach Hotel, at the end of the whale breeding season. The transatlantic marine protected areas partnership project is driven and funded by the European Commission.
