Pointe Blanche Prison: Meeting on prison conditions

0

The situation of inmates at Pointe Blanche prison is considered unworthy. Conditions denounced not only by detainees, but also by their lawyers. Cockroaches, deplorable hygienic conditions, but also overcrowding, are among the complaints raised by the detainees.

The living conditions of prisoners from a member country of the European Union are making waves in the Netherlands. On October 29, the Sint Maarten Monitoring Committee, the Law Enforcement Council, the Pointe Blanche Prison Supervisory Council and the Sint Maarten prosecutor's office met. The absence of prison cells and the poor quality of prison life in the establishment were, in particular, at the center of discussions among the various stakeholders.

During the meeting, it was agreed that the territory of Sint Maarten needs a prison that includes enough cells to provide security, while affirming that "the criminals belong to the prison and not to the street ...". Due to lack of space, some arrested persons have to spend long periods in the cells of the Philipsburg police station. The actors of the group will meet regularly to stay informed and follow the evolution of the situation, assured the prosecutor's office. _RM
