Pointe Blanche Prison: The various recommendations are not followed up

0

The Law Enforcement Council released a report that the situation at Pointe Blanche prison and the remand center is deteriorating. Most of the recommendations made by the Law Enforcement Council and the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and Punishment are not followed up.

In addition to the prison and remand center, the Council also visited the youth rehabilitation center, the Simpson Bay migrant detention center and the cells at the Philipsburg police station. The current Minister of Justice of Sint Maarten, Egbert Doran, said that he had recently met with the Law Enforcement Council and that he would meet with him every month, with the aim of improving the situation at Pointe Blanche prison. The Minister also acknowledged that no body or organization was responsible for dealing with the recommendations and that he would appoint an official to review the Council's exhortations. The latter urges the Minister of Justice of Sint Maarten to implement the recommendations by mid-2020.

Egbert Doran assured that the issue had his full attention, since he had already visited the prison as a member of parliament and twice since his recent appointment as minister, and that he therefore knew the situation well._RM
