The Nature Foundation encourages the public to use Coral Isles brand sun lotions, which are specifically formulated to prevent negative effects on corals, while protecting users from the sun's rays. Over the past 30 years, Sint Maarten has lost more than 80% of its coral reefs, according to the organization. Climate change is not the only culprit. Coral bleaching is also caused by chemicals, including oxybenzone, found in sunscreen lotions. The foundation recalls that the coral reefs contribute significantly to the economy of the island: “All steps should be taken by the community to protect this very important resource.”
