For a surprise, it is! Laura Flessel announced yesterday that she was leaving government. The Minister of Sports, in office for sixteen months, evokes "personal reasons" to justify her choice. Former swimmer Roxana Maracineanu replaces her.

Aged 46, born in Pointe-à-Pitre, Laura Flessel is by far the most decorated of French fencers. Five times Olympic medalist, including two gold medals in 1996 (individual and team), the one who is nicknamed "The Wasp" because of her dexterity to "sting" her opponents was also world champion six times and one times European champion.

Roxana Maracineanu new minister

Silver medalist in Sydney, Roxana Maracineanu is therefore the new sports minister. She became the world swimming champion with her victory over 200m backstroke in Perth during the 1998 Worlds. After her career, Maracineanu became a consultant for various media, such as Europe 1 and France Televisions. Here it is now propelled to the Ministry of Sports!  _AF
