Conserving wetlands offers significant economic benefits for the island, according to Environmental Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC), which has launched the first phase of a study into their economic value. At the end of July, citizens will have the opportunity to discover the first results, but also to share their knowledge and concerns on the subject. “Before rapid urbanization in recent decades, Sint Maarten had at least 19 healthy ponds, of which only five remain today: Salt Pond, Fresh Pond, Little Bay Pond, Red Pond and Mullet Pond.
