NAVIGATION - SAILING: Navigator Guirec Soudée refines his preparation in Saint-Martin

0

Returning from his first crossing of the Atlantic by oar, Guirec Soudée stopped on the island of Saint-Martin to prepare to go back to sea in the other direction.

Adventurer-navigator from Brittany, in the Côtes-d'Armor on a small island, Guirec Soudée made himself known to the public during his first sailing round the world in the company of a little red hen named Monique, journey which lasted 5 years. Based on its experience, Guirec has launched a new challenge: to cross the Atlantic by oar aboard a transoceanic boat 8m long. Departing from the Canaries on December 15, the young sailor returned to the land of Saint-Barth after 74 days and more than 5000km.

The return was not initially planned but nothing stops Guirec who chose the club of Manu and Cécile, the "Wind Adventures" in Orient Bay, to train physically before taking back the oars for a period of 10 to 12 days a day. Monique is not from the maritime part this time even if the chick would have liked to join Guirec in this new adventure. The configuration of the boat as well as the high probability of the latter to turn over were two sufficient reasons to leave Monique in a well-deserved and safe retirement in Brittany. This boat designed for this type of crossing does not offer any comfort, it is impossible to stand or walk on it, and given the small size of the cockpit, 1m², the rest is always done in the same position while being constantly flush with the water, so soaked.

But Guirec's enthusiasm remains intact, proud to make this crossing with the only force of the arms on a boat of more than one ton. Small in the middle of nowhere, to meet marine animals, whales, turtles, dolphins. However, the return crossing promises to be much more eventful than on the outward journey, when another sailor has already achieved this feat in 130 days, Guirec Soudée is aiming for a crossing in 80 days. It will leave Cape Cod on June 8, direction Brest. The expeditions of the sailor which has the wind in its sails are widely followed on social networks. And after ? Route du Rhum next year and the Vendée Globes in 2024! _VX
