Ten young swimmers left on Wednesday November 7 in the direction of Antigua to represent the French part and the Dutch part of the island at the 28th Championships of the East Caribbean States. It was the construction company "Groupe Deldevert" which enabled the French team to organize their trip by sponsoring their entire trip as well as a complete outfit flocked with the name of the island.

Twelve national teams will compete in this championship: Eel, Antigua and Barbuda, British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St Lucia, St Kitts & Nevis, St Vincent and Grenadines, Martinique, and finally, Saint Martin and Sint-Maarten.

During the week swimmers will compete in a 25 meter pool with individual races ranging from 25 to 400 meters as well as relays. Competition ends Sunday with a 1, 3 or 5 km open water race.

To qualify and join their national team, swimmers had to complete the qualifying times required by the organization of the OECS, and this, on at least 3 races during the "Safe Cargo" meeting which took place at the Carib Swim Team club on last month.

Motivated young athletes!

These swimmers aged 9 to 15 now train at the “Carib Swim Team” and “Sharks Swim Team” clubs. Six of them will represent the French part of the island: Miles Cheasley (10) CST, Maxime Gibbs (9) CST, Sacha Gibbs (12) CST, Matias Piazza (11) CST, Nicolas Piazza (9) CST, Joey Schvartz-Arnaud (9) CST and four others the Dutch side: Adaya Bourne (11) Sharks, Nikki Grandtner (11) CST, Emma Marshall (15) CST and Vadym Semkiv (15) CST.

This is only the second time that swimmers from St-Martin have participated in the OESC Championships. Coach Mike Smiechowski, who accompanies the 2 national teams, said he was "very enthusiastic about the development of swimming on the island, a development which begins and goes through young athletes representing their island this week at the Caribbean games . "

We bet that good news will come as soon as they return to "Friendly Island"!  _AF
