Establishment of a mangrove nursery by the Nature Reserve

The Collectivity of Saint-Martin has authorized the Nature Reserve to set up a mangrove nursery, on land which has been provisionally made available to the Nature Reserve of Saint-Martin by the Conservatoire du littoral.

Located near the Etang des Salines d'Orient, this nursery aims to replant no less than 100 mangrove shoots in ponds whose mangroves were particularly decimated by cyclone Irma. An operation which can be carried out thanks, among other things, to funding from the Rotary Club which participates up to 000%, for a project whose total cost is estimated at 50 48 euros. During the nursery visit, along with members of the local club, the governor of the regional district of Rotary International, Delma Maduro, declared that she was enthusiastic about this project.

The Reserve team recovered seeds, pods and seedlings from mangroves, as well as other plants on the ground, to grow them in its premises located at Anse Marcel. The young shoots are then placed in biodegradable pots made of sugar cane fiber. These pots will be buried in the mud of the ponds so that the plants develop there.

To provide shade to the seedlings, it is planned to build a wooden structure, before moving all the shoots to the new plot. The installation of a sign on the site formalized the project, in accordance with the methodological guide of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). _RM
