MICRO-TROTTOIR: “Why did you choose to settle in Saint Martin? "

0

« I discovered Saint Martin thanks to my job at the time, I was a flight attendant. I worked mainly on lines that serve the Caribbean. After several short stays here, I had this feeling of knowing the island of Saint Martin without really knowing it. And every time I left, I left frustrated because even if we sometimes stayed for several days, it never seemed enough to try to understand what my attachment to this territory meant. Then one day we came back with a long haul and I decided to stay. This choice was a turning point in my life which is now completely different, instead of working non-stop, my life is focused on the essential, it is that Saint Martin has brought me, a reconnection with myself. . "It's quite banal as a story ... and at the same time not that much!" I came on vacation with my girlfriend but Saint Martin was not my first destination, it was she who chose at the last moment without telling me.

Suddenly, I was not very happy to come to be honest but I got caught by the magic of the island little by little. And I'm not necessarily talking about the magnificent beaches or the exotic side of the island in general, there is something else that cannot be explained. I didn't realize it right away but it was strong. So much so that I decided to stay… on the other hand my girlfriend left and never came back! "

“On vacation first, with a cruise ship. My son had fallen in love with the island, he was still small at the time but I remember him telling me 'it's like home', I didn't realize how much he hadyour reasons ! When I left, I promised him that we would come back. I promised myself that too. We were supposed to come back in 2017 and I intended to really try to settle here, taking the time, without skipping steps, but there was Irma. I have helped as much as I could remotely by making donations. Life has resumed its daily routine and time has flown. My son always spoke to me about Saint Martin as a reminder, so on a whim, we did it, just before the Covid crisis. We live here and it's not “like home”, it's home. You just had to let the timing of life decide when. "

“I was 8 years old when my parents and I arrived in Saint Martin. We normally only had to stay a few days and then go to Guadeloupe but my mother found work immediately and my father discovered that he had cousins here, it was a real surprise.

I met my cousins who are like siblings now. We never spoke of a departure in Guadeloupe and I am very happy. We sometimes talk about it among ourselves, my mother is convinced that it was a sign from God for us to stay here.  My father doesn't believe it, but if you ask him if he wants to leave, he bangs his fist on the table and shouts "never!"
