MéTéO: A new “wave-submersion” vigilance introduced by Météo France

0

Upstream of the passage of the storm Grace on the weekend, the northern islands were placed in yellow vigilance for in particular “waves-submersion”. This is a new vigilance which replaces that for "dangerous sea at the coast" since July 1, the objective of which is to better anticipate sea level rises, better identify risk areas and thus strengthen the protection of populations on the coast.

“By obviously continuing to take into account the waves and breaking waves on coastal areas, this new vigilance will also integrate the risk of marine submersion (mean coastal flooding) at an infra-territorial scale, that is to say at a finer scale resulting in several zones per territory ”, specifies Météo France which has identified three zones in Saint-Martin, two in Saint-Barthélemy, eleven in the Guadeloupe archipelago, nine in Martinique and two in Guyana.

In Saint-Martin, the areas concerned are the Terres Basses à Sandy Ground area (from Baie Longue to Pointe Arago), the Marigot area to Grand Case (from Pointe Arago to Eastern Point) and the Eastern Point Babit area.

In the event of danger in one of these areas, vigilance will be activated and Météo France will indicate this on its map: a yellow, orange or red coastal strip will be marked. In the absence of danger, however, the green level will not appear on the map.
