Following the broadcast of the program Enquête Exclusive on the M6 channel on Sunday, September 2, which greatly disappointed the population of Saint-Martin, the president of the Collectivity, Daniel Gibbs decided to write to the president of the Management Board of the M6 Group. , Nicolas de Tavernost to "denounce the treatment of biased information (and in many points erroneous) of the show". One thing is certain, the president of the Collectivity is far from having appreciated the report which undermines the integrity of "our" island and the honor of Saint-Martinois. _AF

Mister President,

I hereby denounce the processing of biased information (and in many respects erroneous) from the program Enquête Exclusive on the island of Saint-Martin broadcast by the channel M6, on September 2, 2018. This program entitled "Saint-Martin, a paradise with two faces" classified on the website of Exclusive Survey in the section "Hell in paradise", is built on clichés and blatant untruths, which undermine the integrity of our island and the honor of Saint-Martinois and greatly damage the image of our territory whose economy is based 90% on tourism.

Our population is currently struggling to recover from Hurricane Irma that struck us on September 06, 2017, a year ago almost to the day. If I understand the recipe and the business of this thrilling show developed for audience requirements on the usual triptych (sex, drugs, insecurity), I can not accept from a national chain of the scale of M6 that it can let convey in this kind of scandalous broadcast of false information on a French overseas territory.

In addition, this way of proceeding which consists in carrying the thrust to the one who is already on the ground demonstrates the weakness and the lack of professionalism of its designers. Knowing the angle of its broadcasts, I nevertheless took the time to meet the presenter Mr. de la Villardière, in July 2018, to have the opportunity to explain the reality of the territory and the difficulties we are going through in this period of reconstruction.

He had obviously already made up his mind ... Whatever the subject, it seems to me that every professional must describe the reality of the place he presents and translate the truth. But still it is necessary for this to have a fair and objective look at the territories that we explore by taking the time to understand their history and their functioning, which the program Enquête exclusive unfortunately did not take the time to do in Saint-Martin and I regret it. The poor quality of this prime-time broadcast touched the hearts of my compatriots who were deeply hurt by the stupidity of this report.

The overseas community of Saint-Martin and its inhabitants, respectful of press freedom, have always welcomed the national media with open arms; it is precisely because of this type of documentary devaluing and truncated in its journalistic treatment that we lose confidence in the objectivity and the capacity of the press to produce relevant and fair work; henceforth the community will initiate legal action against any media which will show itself defamating with regard to Saint-Martin or will damage its image.

Mr. Chairman of the Management Board, I know I can count on your common sense to remind this producer once again of the foundations of the journalist’s profession, so that he can question himself and correct his approach once and for all.

Finally, we would be happy, Mr. President, to receive a team of professional journalists from your channel, so that they can come and shoot a format of the same duration on the resilience of Saint-Martin and thus counterbalance this cost-effective reporting without any interest. if not to harm.

Thank you for giving the opportunity to our beautiful island of Saint-Martin to be seen and perceived in its entirety with its strengths, its weaknesses and all the aspects that compose it.

Counting on your diligence, receive, Mr. President, my best regards.

Thank you to President Gibbs for giving the list of blatant stereotypes and untruths that would undermine the integrity of our island and the honor of the Saints-Martinois.

That this documentary “very strongly” harms the image of our territory, whose economy is based 90% on tourism, seems unlikely to me.

In any case, the figure of 90% is a flagrant untruth, because on the French side this figure must be reduced to around 33% according to sources other than that of the COM (see in particular the recent report of the court of accounts on past activities from the island.

It would be better for the president to roll up his sleeves and get busy building a new Saint Martin where this kind of reporting could not be done.

    Let’s posit!

thanks especially to the collective set up by the guy from sxminfo who gathered more than 10000 people in a few days. Without it Gibbs would have said absolutely nothing.
In addition, this collective has not finished with this kind of talk because a complaint has been filed. Letuvee said he didn't care about the result, that the symbolism won. Mr. Gibbs, apart from your diplomatic threats, what are you doing? do you get to work one day?
