MARTINIQUE: Debate on the dangers of chlordecone

Open doors were organized by the medical association for the protection of the environment and health (AMSES), last Wednesday, at the La Batelière hotel, on the theme “Is environmental pollution dangerous for health . Why and how? ” On this occasion, several health professionals spoke of diseases caused by chlordecone on pregnant women and newborns. In 2014, a French study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology revealed that this pesticide notably increases the risk of premature birth. Chlordecone was used in the West Indies from 1973 until 1993 to fight against the banana weevil, specifies the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm).
