With more than 1,5 million tourists per year, the cruise represents a financial windfall for the territory, precisely for the Dutch part which collects the dock fees. It is also the primary source of income for many businesses, traders, taxis, etc., on both sides of the island.

But with the covid-19 crisis, cruise lines have stopped their routes. They announced the suspension of cruises from the United States until at least October 31.

The management of the port of St Maarten has mobilized to get activity back as quickly as possible. She invites all people who depend on the cruise to come forward and express their complaints. All requests and discussions will be forwarded to the US CDC, the disease prevention and control center that advises travelers depending on the destination.

“The cruise industry has evolved during the covid-19 pandemic with a focus on providing safer and healthier vacations when cruise ships start to sail again. The industry is ready to integrate new health and safety practices during a cruise demonstrating the industry's commitment to its customers, ”comments the management of the port of St Maarten, who recalls having implemented a health protocol to ensure the safety of its staff and tourists, according to WHO recommendations.

Comments were due before last night. (soualigapost.com)
