Back to school allowance (ARS) will be paid on Tuesday, August 18, 2020 in mainland France and in the overseas departments (Guadeloupe, Guyana, Martinique). The family income limit varies according to the number of dependent children on July 31, 2020 and the age of the children, read on the site service-public.fr.

The ARS (not to be confused with the Regional Health Agency), is an aid intended for parents who have low incomes to enable them to meet the expenses of the start of the school year (school supplies, equipment, clothing). This year, the back-to-school allowance is exceptionally increased by € 100 to help families meet back-to-school expenses. This year it benefits 3 million families.

The ARS is granted under certain conditions:

  • You are responsible for one or more schoolchildren, students or apprentices aged 6 to 18 (for the start of the 2020 school year, the child must be born between September 16, 2002 and December 31, 2014).
  • Your child must be enrolled in a public or private educational institution or organization, or with a distance education organization, such as the National Center for Distance Learning (Cned). On the other hand, this allowance is not granted when the child is educated within his family.
  • If your child is entrusted by the judge to social assistance for children (Ase) or to a health or education service or establishment, his back-to-school allowance will be kept in a blocked account with the Caisse des Dépôts and consignments. It will be paid to your child, at his request, when he is of age, to support him in his autonomy.

A "measure of solidarity"

It is "a measure of solidarity for our children, so that they can go back to school with everything they need in the kit and in the schoolbag to learn well", noted Wednesday the Minister of Solidarity, Olivier Véran.

Assigned under conditions of resources, the ARS goes this year to 469,97 euros for a child aged 6 to 10 (after 368,84 euros in 2019), to 490,39 euros for a child aged 11 to 14 (389,19 euros last year) and 503,91 euros for a child aged 15 to 18 (402,67 euros in 2019), said the ministry.

Apprentices also concerned

It is paid for "each child in school born between September 16, 2002 and December 31, 2014 inclusive", as well as "each child born after this date and already enrolled in CP", according to the press release. It also concerns apprentices, indicates the Family Allowance Fund (CAF) on its site.

ARS will be paid to parents whose 2018 annual income was less than 25.093 euros for a dependent child on July 31 of this year, 30.884 euros for two dependent children or 36.675 euros for three dependent children.

Executed "as part of the recovery plan", the increase in the ARS "reinforces the support provided by the government to low-income families in the face of a crisis which has sometimes weighed heavily on their income and their daily lives," noted the ministry. . On May 15, "exceptional solidarity aid was paid to more than 4 million low-income households and families", he recalled.
