BIODIVERSITY: An endemic beetle species in the process of being protected

The ministers of the ecological and united transition and of agriculture want to protect an insect endemic to Saint Martin, the solenopter of Chalumeau (Solenoptera chalumeaui).

"In the overseas departments and communities, work is underway to update the legislative system for the protection of animal and plant species", explains the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which also noted that there has no protected insect species in Saint Martin.

He decided to make up for this lack by taking a protection order for a species of beetle that can only be found in Saint-Martin, the solenopter of Chalumeau, present only on the mountains of Pic Paradis, "is an area of extremely reduced global distribution, of the order of 0,10 km² ”.

The protection order proposes in particular the prohibition to destroy eggs of the insect, the intentional disturbance of animals in the natural environment, the degradation of breeding sites, etc.

The decree has not yet entered into force; it had been subjected to a public consultation last month. (Source: soualigapost.com)
