At the beginning of December last year, RP denounced a complaint against her father, VP, who had beaten her. The events took place at the family home in the presence of his mother and other members of his family.
58-year-old VP is being prosecuted for violence. He was summoned Thursday morning before the local court of Saint-Martin. He was present at the opening of the hearing but had to be absent. The case was called at midday but he had not returned. He was therefore tried in his absence.
On the other hand, his wife, FP, was present. She told the court that her husband "believes he can solve problems by force." She described him as someone violent.
The judge observed on reading the file "recurrent violence" within the family. Their daughter said that since returning to the island in July, her father had beaten her four times. "This man distributes blows," notes the prosecutor.
After deliberation, the court finds VP guilty of the charges against him and sentences him to six months in prison. VP will have to meet with the sentence enforcement judge to see if he will be incarcerated or if the sentence will be adjusted.
