Internet: Very high speed everywhere in Saint-Martin, end of 2022!

Seize the opportunity of reconstruction to create a new Saint-Martin. This promise made by President Daniel Gibbs in the aftermath of cyclone Irma finds its full illustration with the project to reduce the digital divide, by the installation of optical fiber in an underground network in all districts.

Destroyed by Irma, the airlines that brought landlines and the internet to homes have deprived many of these two essential services. Today, the Collectivity is aligned with the national will to reduce the digital divide, by bringing very high speed internet in all the districts and all the dwellings of the island, even the most difficult to access. The principle is to ensure the resilience of the network in the face of a next hurricane, by burying the sheaths through which the optical fiber pass as much as possible, entrusted us Jean-Sébastien Hamlet, elected in charge of the new technologies and audiovisual commission , alongside Jean-Pierre Razin, director of digital and audiovisual within the Economic Development Pole. This project to cover the population of Saint-Martin in THD is being planned in cooperation with operators and the State. It is part of the Very High Speed France Plan insofar as it aims to provide THD (speed greater than 30 Mbit / s) throughout France by 2022.

Launch of the project in 2020!

The task is considerable: almost 78 kilometers of distribution networks and almost as many connection networks to be rebuilt throughout the territory, for an estimated amount, at first glance, between 14 and 18 M €. The territorial digital development master plan is being adapted to take into account these new data, and should be ready by summer 2019. It will then have to be approved by the Territorial Council.

Operators, who already offer very high speed internet in the districts where underground pipes exist, are in the starting blocks. In addition, the Banque des Territoires (Caisse des Dépôts group) launched a study to speed up the reconstruction of an adapted digital infrastructure, which it presented to all digital players on April 4 in the prefecture, during a technical committee. The launch of the project is announced during 2020 with the objective of covering 100% of households in Saint-Martin by the end of 2022. It depends on solid cooperation between telecom operators, as well as between public authorities and telecom operators if we want to reach this goal.
