The Sint Maarten public prosecutor's office has just extended the provisional detention of an individual suspected of human trafficking, partly Dutch, by sixty days. At the end of January 2019, he had already been sentenced by the Saint-Martin court to a three-year prison term for similar acts committed in the French part in 2013.

Eleven years ago, he had taken part in the transport of clandestine people as captain of a boat. He had picked up 23 people from a beach in the Lowlands and had to take them to the Virgin Islands. But the boat had sunk in the Anguilla channel, three bodies had been recovered and six had been missing. He had been convicted of manslaughter alongside five other individuals. As part of this investigation, he had served a year in pre-trial detention.
