25-year-old Estika Halley is fighting for her life after being stabbed several times on the morning of Sunday July 31 by a man who then tried to slit her throat. Miraculously, she survived.
Hospitalized in the intensive care unit of St. Maarten Medical Center, the young woman, mother of a little girl, is in critical condition but deemed stable by doctors. Known for having been elected senior carnival queen in 2016 at the Festival Village, Estika Halley lived through the horror last Sunday. The drama unfolded in the parking lot of the Emerald Funeral Home and Crematorium in Cay Hill, located not far from Sint Maarten Hospital.
The attack was recorded on surveillance cameras at the Emerald Institution. The police still do not know the circumstances that led the perpetrator to commit such a brutal act or the relationship that bound him to the victim. Identified on social media, suspect Marlon Michael Brooks fled the scene in Estika Halley's car after he repeatedly stabbed her all over her body, cut her throat and dropped her off near St. Maarten Medical Center at the dawn. French on Sunday afternoon, a large quantity of blood was noted by the technical experts. The suspect was seen entering the Philipsburg police station on the day of the tragedy, around noon on Sunday. At 14:19 p.m., Sint Maarten police announced the arrest of the suspect involved in the attempted stabbing, officially identified as Marlon Michael Brooks.
Estika Halley, a trained beautician and head of her own business, had recently returned to settle in Saint-Martin with her daughter, after having lived and worked in the Netherlands. Police said in a press release that the victim had undergone surgery and is now in a serious but stable condition. In that same statement, Sint Maarten law enforcement said the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released at a later date.
