Exhibition: Art works hung in the street

Young artist from Saint-Martin, Claudio Arnell is at the origin of an exhibition whose works are hung on two walls of the cemetery of Marigot and whose inauguration took place on Friday, November 1. An exhibition which he considers a challenge and which should allow him to have an exchange and contact with the general public.

For Claudio Arnell, this street exhibition on the walls of the cemetery comes to him from a childhood memory, when he used, every November 1, to come with his family to put flowers on the graves and light a candle.

"It's part of me, of my childhood culture," says Claudio. The latter wanted, on this occasion, to make an exhibition for the general public, "because I am always in the studio, locked in my workshop and my creativity". This exhibition, the artist sees it as a challenge that he wants to share with the population of the two parts of the island. Exhibition to which everyone is invited for "that there is this mixture that can be found in my frescoes".

"I am encouraged and inspired because it is street art", and being outside, Claudio believes that there is "a certain openness, that these works have a life of their own, that they either face challenges, whether it is degraded either by the climate, by people, whatever… ”. The young artist assures us that the exhibition is "a tribute to the souls of Saint-Martin. A funeral is something a young West Indian has lived with from a very young age. For me, a funeral is like a wedding, a birthday, I've had it since I was very young ”. The cemetery is in the center of Marigot and Claudio considers that after Irma it was very dark, so he wanted to bring back “light through the vector of art, through the aspects of color, and to through floral and nature aesthetics ”.

All the photos he used in these works were taken after Irma, then the work was to compose them.

“My photographic technique is the processing of a photo under the gaze and through the gaze of a painter. There is the framing, the composition of the photo itself, the saturated color. Then, I redo a denser composition ”.

The artist took the axis of contrast and the first four works, located in front of the entrance to the cemetery "are quite dynamic, with this aspect of mosaic". On the wall facing the car park, "they are more of a softer frieze, with a more neutral, more refined and more contemporary appearance". The works will remain on display for at least a month, then everything will depend on the weather conditions, but also on what people who pass by will do with it…_RM
