As part of its mission to protect, restore and promote the natural heritage of Saint Martin, the Nature Reserve contributes to the European Life BIODIV'OM Mérous project, in particular by implementing exploratory sampling to describe larval recruitment on our reefs.
The aim is to produce knowledge on the seasonal arrivals of very young fish and crustaceans seeking to colonize a habitat ensuring their survival. This critical phase in their development generally leads to up to 90% mortality and allows the reception of young recruits who are local or may come from neighboring islands.
From October 3 to 10, 2019, in collaboration with our partner ECOCEAN using its patented method, we will set up a scientific "farm" allowing the observation and identification of post-larvae collected before their release. in the natural environment. These data will be unprecedented for the geographical area and will confirm or not the potential for recolonization of our waters by species that have become rare ”, specifies Aude Berger, LIFE BIODIV'OM project manager.
Note that this initiative is supported by the European Union, the Ministry of Ecological and Solidarity Transition, the French Agency for Biodiversity and the Association for the Management of the Natural Reserve of Saint-Martin.
