ENVIRONMENT: Fighting against insalubrity, everyone's business!

Unauthorized deposits are unfortunately more and more numerous, they are now found in the very heart of inhabited neighborhoods where they spoil the view and the life of their inhabitants.

Throwing waste in a place where it should not be is considered illegal dumping, regardless of the nature or volume of the latter. This act of incivility degrades the living environment of the population, causes visual nuisances, pollutes the soil, etc. As a reminder, illegal deposits of household waste, bulky items and green waste are prohibited by law according to articles L541-44 to L542-48 of the Environmental Code (available on the site of the Collectivity of Saint Martin) . However, it is not uncommon to come across rubbish on our island stored just about anywhere, without any respect for the environmental code. Since Irma, some buildings have been rotting and becoming potentially dangerous dumps because they are located in busy areas or sometimes even near schools. We must not forget that the island of Saint Martin lives off tourism and that the image it sends back then becomes negative. In addition, we have entered the hurricane season for almost a month now and this debris can then become risks very quickly. There are many associations that regularly clean the territory but they are often overwhelmed by the amount of wild dumps that appear day by day, such as at Galion or at the entrance to Colombier. All citizens are key players in waste management and it is up to everyone to take their responsibilities by throwing their garbage in the appropriate places. It is therefore important to find suitable solutions in order to effectively combat this problem which concerns everyone. The smallest action counts if we want to offer our island a future in a healthy environment. _LR
