Exasperated teachers from Saint Martin demand normal working conditions!

They make it known loud and clear in an open letter addressed to Emmanuel Macron.

Monsieur le Président de la République,

A year ago, you came on an official visit to Saint-Martin, after Cyclone Irma which devastated the island and put several public schools out of service. We listened, filled with hope, to your statement to the press: "We will do it quickly, we will do well and we will do better". Contrary to numerous press announcements, suggesting that all is well in Saint-Martin, we have drawn up a summary of the real situation in many schools (inventory attached).

It is easy to see how the situation has remained frozen. Reading this table, we can only conclude: the start of the 2018 school year is taking place in abnormal conditions, with the same existing sites just after the passage of Hurricane Irma, a year ago.

How is it possible ?

Officials of the French State, we did not even manage to get the president of the Collectivity of Saint-Martin to agree to take a look at this table, during a difficult interview, on Tuesday September 11, 2018. We did not succeed either in obtaining a response to our request for a timetable, concerning the work to be carried out, in the first and second degree establishments.

Worse, to this reiterated request, which had been supported by the highest state body in Saint-Martin, on the day of the start of the school year (September 3, 2018), the delegation was answered (parents, students, teachers) that henceforth, the Collectivity would no longer give any delay ...

Even though we patiently await the reconstruction within a reasonable time of the establishments destroyed by the hurricane, we are standing up today to claim the repairs promised for this re-entry, without delay (This is not a structural work) .

Parents and teachers unsuccessfully requested a postponement of the start of the school year, while the work listed was completed. Yet everyone knows that the noise pollution, currently generated by a site initially planned for last summer, make it impossible to teach or simply listen and reduce the safety of students.

On this date, we also expect the promised modulars, in sufficient number, safe and ready to be used.

Who is looking at the real operating difficulties in schools, colleges, high schools in Saint Martin?

What about students and teachers?

How can we calmly approach a new school year under the same auspices of expedients, breaches of obligations, of the 2017-2018 school year?

For our students, all traumatized by Irma, and so severely tested, we have transcended our own trials. We held firm but above all we accepted the unacceptable, from October 2017 to June 2018, in silence ...

That is enough !

Mr President of the Republic, your next visit represents for us, teachers of Saint-Martin, dependent on the academy of Guadeloupe, the opportunity to point out again all these unworthy realities, all this contempt for us. This is indeed contempt because faced with such a negative assessment of the completion of work in schools, we are subject to hearing and reading in the media the highlighting of "all is well" by all those who are not. not on the ground.

Our essential demands can be summed up in a few sentences:

- Repair our schools.

- Respect our students.

- Treat us like all other teachers, civil servants (principle of equality enshrined in the Constitution).

- Preserve our health, hygiene and safety at work (Labor Code).
