ECONOMY: Tourists are less affluent and Americans stay shorter

0

More than 60% of the tourists staying are from the United States and Canada, according to a study by the government of Sint Maarten. If the Americans return to the island on a regular basis, they have changed their way of consuming and the analysis of the various government studies reveals that they are spending less.

In 2018, the average length of stay for a U.S. national was 6,7 nights, four years earlier it was 8,1 nights in the Dutch portion. In 2015, it was 7,6 nights.

Canadians also reduced their stay: 7,5 nights in 2018 compared to 8,8 nights in 2014 or 7,9 nights in 2015.

The average amount of spending is also falling. In 2018, an American spent 86 USD per day per person, this is 33 dollars less compared to 2013. Today, 46% of their expenses are devoted to accommodation compared to 18% in 2013.

The most significant development - and certainly the most important from an economic point of view for the island - concerns the social origin of visitors.

In 2013, tourists with an annual income greater than $ 75 represented more than half of tourists (000%), in 56,7, their share decreased by almost ten points.

It is especially tourists with an income between 75 and 000 dollars who are less likely to come: 100% in 000, 19% in 2013 and 14% in 2014. Tourists with an annual income of more than 12 USD accounted for 2018% of visitors in 125 and 000% in 30.

The share of tourists with an annual income below 25 USD is 000% in 20, it was 2018% in 6.

Tourists with an income between 25 and 000 USD represent a large third of tourists staying in 75, in 000 they represented a quarter.
