Water polluted with bromates: The collective for Drinking Water in Saint-Martin wishes to join the monitoring committee!

In a letter sent to the Prefect, Sylvie Feucher, at the start of the week, the drinking water collective in Saint-Martin asked to participate in the various meetings of the monitoring committee, in the same way as the State services, those of the Collectivity, the ARS and the EAASM.

Madam the Prefect,

We request that our Collectif pour l'Eau Potable à Saint-Martin be represented by one of its spokespersons in all meetings of the monitoring committee bringing together your services, the Collectivity, the ARS and the EAASM following the interruption of drinking water service in Saint-Martin since June 2019.

Our request is motivated by the fact that the reports of this monitoring committee do not answer the questions posed by the population and in particular the nearly 1 people who make up the Facebook group of the collective that we urgently created in waiting to form an association.

Indeed, the monitoring committee provides us with contradictory information.

- By first explaining to us that the controlled water leaving the water production plant was free of bromates but that rates greater than 14 times the sanitary threshold remained in the networks.

- Then by telling us in the last press release that Saur was going to change the disinfectants and the membranes of its water production plant.

- What is the source of the pollution with bromates, the water production plant or the distribution networks? or both ?

In addition, with regard to health risks, we receive information from the monitoring committee aimed at minimizing the health risks from the consumption of bromates.

Some members of the committee explain to us for example that it would be necessary to consume water loaded with bromates up to 100 times the sanitary threshold every day for 40 years to risk being poisoned. We are surprised by this information knowing that there is apparently no study carried out to date on the impact on human health of regular consumption of  bromates, and on the other hand, we do not yet know precisely to this day since when the water is contaminated with bromates.

These contradictions and inaccuracies are not acceptable, especially since drinking water is a fundamental right for the population of Saint-Martin and that, in addition, the consumers that we are do not receive any compensation for the absence of water. drinkable.

I would therefore ask you to give a favorable response to our request and provide us with the location and place of the next follow-up committee so that we can participate through one of our spokespersons.

Very respectfully.
