Polluted water: What is chlorine dioxide disinfection?

0

To eliminate bromates in the pipes, the Water and Sanitation Establishment (EEASM) decided to implement a chlorine dioxide disinfection system on the drinking water network.

• What is the context?

Water is produced by the seawater desalination plant located in Galisbay. It is filtered using the reverse osmosis system, then remineralized and disinfected by UV treatment and chlorination at the factory level.

The water is then stored in the two reservoirs at Galisbay, each with a capacity of 5 cubic meters. From there it is pumped to the Morne Valois reservoir (000 cubic meters) and to the two of Mont des Accords (2000 cubic meters each).

It is from these reservoirs that the water supply for the French part is made, with the exception of the sectors of Anse Marcel, Saint-Louis and Morne O'Reilly.

• Where should disinfection take place?

Today there is no disinfection system at the Morne Valois and Mont des Accords reservoirs, disinfection by chlorination is only carried out at the factory.

The EASM therefore wants to set up an injection of chlorine dioxide at the outlet of the Morne Valois and Mont des Accords reservoirs.

• How will disinfection be implemented?

A room will have to be built at each of the two tanks in order to house the disinfection installation and allow the storage of products.

The injection will be made from solutions in 9% hydrochloric acid and 7,5% sodium chlorite drums.

The EASM wants the installation to be sized to treat a maximum flow of 250m3 / h for a dosage of 0,5mg / liter of chlorine dioxide. It should also allow automatic adjustment of the chlorine dioxide concentrations in the water as a function of the flow rate and the physico-chemical characteristics of the water.

  Who will do the work?

The EEASM will select a company which will be in charge of installing the machines. The duration of the contract must not exceed two months. A call for tenders has already been launched.

The company will also have to supply chemicals which will be stored in tanks (Source: soualigapost.com)
