DEMOGRAPHY: A girl as the first SXM baby of the year 2023

0

The maternity ward of the Louis-Constant Fleming Hospital Center was busy on New Year's Eve, a little girl was born in the morning, so she becomes the first Saint-Martin baby of the year 2023.

The mother and the pitchoune are doing wonderfully. N.SC (initials of the child) was born this Sunday, January 1, 2023 at 9:56 a.m. after a cesarean section. If her 25-year-old mother, E.SC, would have preferred to give birth naturally, she is delighted with the birth of this magnificent little girl who slept peacefully by her side. It is a little boy who was the last born of the past year for a total of 546 births recorded in 2022 at the Concordia hospital. Figure significantly down for a few years according to the maternity service team: 636 newborns in 2019, 582 babies in 2020 and a little less with 568 for the year 2021. The explanation for the slowdown in the rate of progression of births is multiple: "Times are hard" confides to us a midwife, the cost of living and inflation, the departure of young adults from the territory to the metropolis for their studies or a job, etc. The hospital's maternity ward could count up to 800 births a year until recently when the numbers are steadily dropping. If the demographic report of the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) for the year 2022 is not yet available, that of 2021 already showed a variation in the curve of births despite a slight increase following the spring 2020 covid health crisis.

The confinements therefore did not all have the same impact on births nine months later: drop of historic magnitude for the first confinement (-13% births in January 2021 compared to January 2020), increase for the second ( +4% in August and September 2021 compared to the same months in 2020), drop compared to pre-pandemic births for the third (-3% in January 2022 compared to January 2020). 742.052 babies were born in France in 2021. This is 0,9% more than in 2020. For the month of October 2022 (latest data available by INSEE), 60.213 newborns were born compared to 67.160 in October 2021. The lack of statistics to establish a Saint-Martin demographic assessment unfortunately does not allow us to go into such details on a territorial scale. However, three babies have been born at the Center Hospitalier Louis-Constant Fleming, including two girls and a boy, since January 1 of this new year. Congratulations to the parents. _VX
