SPOTLIGHT / Queen conch pearl or innovation at the service of the island's economy

0

A bus parked on the side of the road at Terres Basses where he lived with his partner after Irma. It was there that we met Sébastien Meygret, the enlightened who developed this crazy project.

He is 32 years old, the same age as his bus. He specifies that he and his bus left the factory the same year and the same month. It's a sign, we say! Sébastien won the innovation competition organized by Saint-Martin initiative. His project is totally atypical and seemed crazy to many people a few years ago. Not so long ago, he lived with his partner and business partner in Honduras where they had a tourist business. Unfortunately, following the coup d'état that took place in the country, not a tourist set foot on it for nine months. And then, a storm finishes convincing them that they must change lanes. At valiant heart nothing impossible ! They decide to embark on fish farming. They try the lobster and the sea urchins but it didn't work, too many problems. They try the Queen Conch and not only does it work, but they also notice that Queen Conch produces pearls. It is the beginning of a crazy adventure populated by extraordinary meetings with characters straight out of novels. Through his meetings with specialists in marine fauna and environmental protection, a shrimp farmer, a brilliant researcher, he ended up compiling data that no one had yet thought of gathering. He readily admits that all the techniques he uses to produce his Queen Conch pearls already existed. The innovation lies in using them together. And it's not nothing. It took two and a half years to release the first quality series, but today Sébastien and his partner are able to produce conch pearls of commercial quality.

“Wanting to set up a project is looking for problems. And look for the problems, is to want to find solutions. " Sebastien Meygret

Today, the fine team is looking for a site to install the farm with the ambition of being able to develop a new activity in Saint-Martin. An activity that could put the island in the spotlight because it is indeed a whole new activity in the world. And then, they do not stop there since they want to recruit locally and train young people who could, if they wish one day, create their own farms. Because Sébastien has a vision of the economy and the world that goes beyond the simple desire to get rich. He looks at the world with the eyes of this generation who understood that we can no longer afford to play it solo. To win and be happy, you have to play it as a team, for your community. For him, "training locally means valuing people and giving back pride that has been taken away in a totally illogical way". We are of course on a radically different approach and yet more and more widespread because it is in line with the world in which we live. So Sébastien is looking for the ideal place to develop his activity. It is, as we will have understood, supported by Saint-Martin Initiative but also the CCI and the bank. All that's missing is the site. So, if you have a piece of land and you want to take part in an extraordinary adventure, you should quickly signal it. _NB
