executive council: The adoption of the Saint-Martin Unity flag as a symbol of unity, causes debate on the form

The president of the Collectivity proposed to the members of the territorial council meeting in plenary session last Thursday, to adopt the flag of Saint-Martin whose dominant colors are green, yellow and blue, as a “joint symbol of the affirmation of the unity and identity of Saint-Martin".

On August 23, Louis Mussington and the Prime Minister of Sint Maarten met to reflect on “the importance to be given to the St Martin Unity Flag in [their] respective administrative context”. Considering that "the two national communities [have always lived] in peace and harmony for centuries", that "the inhabitants of the island have repeatedly demonstrated their attachment to the question of the cultural unity of this territory", they agreed to adopt "a cultural symbol which would be common to both parts of the territory". And by mutual agreement, they suggested that this symbol be the St Martin Unity Flag, unveiled on August 31, 1990 and designed in part by Daniela Jeffry.

If all elected officials agreed on the principle of unity and to have a common flag with the Dutch side, Team Gibbs and Angeline Laurence preferred not to take part in the vote because they would have preferred that the population be consulted on choice of flag. The debate lasted 1h15. (more details on www.soualigapost.com)
