Fuels: prices also soar in Saint-Martin

Saint-Martin is not immune to soaring oil prices. The liter of gasoline has never been so high in Saint-Martin; it is around 1,60 euro in gas stations in the French part. Direct consequence of the war in Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia, according to a local importer.

"The other producing countries cannot cope with the daily production necessary to cover the world demand for fuel and thus compensate for the tonnes of barrels that Russia supplied before", explains an importer who still expects increases in the weeks  come.

“Our price is directly conditioned on the market price of refined fuel. Itself more or less linked to that of crude oil”, confirms another service station manager. The latter also underlines that the rise in prices in Saint-Martin has been gradual with always a certain difference with prices in mainland France. However, he notes that this gap is tending to decrease but does not explain it.

Today, the price is around 40 cents higher in mainland France, whereas at the start of the crisis, it was almost one euro. A year ago, the difference was 0,54 cents.

In the Dutch part, the price of fuel is more expensive (1,83 dollars). The prices charged on Saint-Martin are among the highest in the Caribbean, after those of Guadeloupe (€1,94/l) and Martinique (€1,96/l). In Saint Lucia, a liter of gasoline costs €1,23. In Jamaica, it varies between €1,35 and €1,38. In Saint-Vincent, it is around 1,15 euros. Local governments have also seen these same price increases and some have taken action to support consumers.
