MOUNTAINEERING: After Mont Blanc, Dan Kalakech climbs Kilimanjaro to raise awareness about Vitiligo

As part of his Summit 2 Summit Challenge, Daniel Kalakech, accompanied by his adventure companion James Plumey, climbed the highest peak in Africa on Thursday, October 12, thus completing his double challenge to raise awareness about vitiligo.

On Uhuru Kilimanjaro peak at 5895 meters above sea level, Dan Kalakech raised the colors of the vitiligo flag and the Unity Flag, thus marking the end of his Summit 2 Summit Challenge. As a reminder, the 30-year-old Franco-Lebanese physiotherapist in Saint-Martin had set himself a major double challenge, the ascent of two major peaks: Mont Blanc and Kilimanjaro. Through this double sporting prowess, Dan wanted to raise awareness among as many people as possible about vitiligo, an autoimmune disease from which he suffers, which manifests itself by the appearance of white spots on the skin and which often rhymes with school bullying. . After having crossed the summit of Mont Blanc (4805m altitude) on September 10, Dan Kalakach gave himself one month to complete his Summit 2 Summit Challenge. The training was intense and the climbing conditions were not always favorable but the challenge was met: the flags were carried high and proudly by the two adventurers. Louis Mussington, president of the Community, met Daniel Kalakech last August before his departure to show him his support: “Bearing values of unity and solidarity, Daniel and James will carry the Unity Flag with them. This gesture also aims to promote Saint-Martin well beyond the borders. I had the honor of presenting our Unity Flag to Daniel, and I can’t wait to follow this incredible adventure on social media.” At the end of the project, Daniel Kalakech will donate part of the donations to the Saint-Martin association Vitiligo Educate Inspire & Support SXM (VEISS) and another part to the Bordeaux research service for vitiligo of Professor Julien Seneschal. _VX
