Brown algae: launch of a scientific mission

0

Why do Sargassum regularly invade the Northern Islands, Guadeloupe and Martinique? This is the question that Thierry Thibaut, a researcher at the Mediterranean Institute of Oceanology (MIO), will try to answer. The latter is participating as head of mission, along with other researchers, in an expedition aimed at understanding the origin of this phenomenon which is damaging to tourism. The team's departure also took place in Cayenne at the start of the week aboard the oceanographic ship Antéa which will sail for a month across the western tropical Atlantic. The researchers will, among other things, carry out "measurements and samples in order to identify the processes which are at the origin of the proliferation of this New Sargasso Sea".
