Cyclone season (1/2): Prepare for weather phenomena

0

Faced with recent phenomena and upcoming events, the Prefecture of Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin and the Collectivity of Saint-Martin remind everyone of the need to anticipate and best prepare the territory. Special attention must be paid by everyone, individuals and professionals, to cleaning the island and picking up bulky items that can become dangerous projectiles.

• Cleaning the island:

Individuals, associations, hoteliers and condominium trustees are invited to pick up their bulky items and clean up the surroundings of their premises, construction sites and homes. Civic spirit and the sense of responsibility of all those involved in the implementation of this cleanup are called upon.

It is up to professionals to take all the necessary measures with their service providers to remove green waste, bulky waste and any waste that may be dangerous in the event of strong winds to the Grandes Cayes eco-site.

Green waste, rubble, bulky items and other rubbish deposited near garbage shelters or by the roadside could represent a danger for the population. The safety of all of us is at stake.

Individuals and businesses are asked to sort green waste, sheets and pieces of wood, before transporting them to the Grandes Cayes ecosite. This preliminary sorting is important because it will facilitate the treatment of waste by the Grands Cayes ecosite and the Galisbay recycling center. As a reminder, unauthorized dumping of household waste, bulky items and green waste is prohibited by law (Article L. 541-3 of the Environment Code).

• Securing construction sites:

It is requested in anticipation of a cyclonic event to secure all your sites (crane, containers, various materials). Waste from craftsmen (waste from construction sites such as rubble, tiles, used air conditioners, empty paint cans, etc.), traders (cardboard, various packaging, etc.), must be disposed of by the companies at the Grandes Cayes ecosite.

• Preparing the habitat:

It is important to carry out, as far as possible, the reinforcement of your habitat and useful verifications of the structures of this latter:

- Consolidate the house at the level of its exits (doors, windows),

- Check your protection devices such as cyclonic shutters in the absence of which provide protection in pieces of plywood to be fixed on a wooden frame,

- Check and tighten the fixings of your roof (one screw at least every 50 centimeters),

- Ensure proper maintenance of the rainwater drainage system (channels, gutters),

- If you live in a flood zone, be sure to prepare a system that will reduce the penetration of water into your home (metal plates, sandbags, etc.),

- Define a "safe room", a safe room, without window or door leading to the outside,

- Organize your evacuation if necessary. Choose the home of a friend or family member and tell them about it now,

- Check your insurance (home, car).
