On the Dutch side, Prime Minister Jacobs also spoke about this anniversary date which was on everyone's mind.

On September 6, in a press release issued by the Ministry of General Affairs of Sint Maarten, Prime Minister Silveria Elfrieda Jacobs declared, among other things: "This week is marked by memories in the history books of Saint -Martin. Five years ago, just as the sting of Hurricane Luis seemed to finally wear off with generations, the island was again thrown into chaos and destruction. Needless to say what happened during Hurricane Irma, we were there, and we felt the impact; we are still feeling the impact. (…) We remember the lives lost. We remember, but we remain. We are tired, but we are unwavering. We took a long time to heal and we continue to heal. (…) Together we have rebuilt after the destruction, slowly but surely businesses have reopened, houses have been repaired, visitors have returned and we are more than grateful. Grateful for the outside help of our Kingdom partners and international agencies, volunteers around the world. Together we survived and began to thrive. Sint Maarten is robust, Sint Maarten remains, and even if we may have been bruised, we continue to live our motto "Semper Pro Grediens": Always in progress! » _VX
