SINT MAARTEN: Shipwrecks being removed

1

Last month the removal operations of the wrecks of boats which sank in the lagoon of Simpson bay following the passage of Irma, began in Sint Maarten. Initiated by the government, the work is being carried out by the Dutch company Koole Constructors. 109 wrecks have been identified and will be removed from the water and treated by October.

Koole Constructors has locally deployed several pieces of equipment on a site between the causeway and the airport. His teams remove the boat from the water and then dismantle it on site. Waste is sorted and stored in containers. They will then be evacuated. The cost of the project amounts to $ 11,4 million, including $ 1,4 million in assistance to the owner.

Koole Constructors had been selected by the Collectivity to remove the El Maud wreck in Marigot Bay in 2017 and to remove the wrecks after Irma in 2019 following a call for tenders. But the contract had to be canceled; the prefecture's legality check noted irregularities. Some of the installations planned by Koole were subject to authorization, but the company did not have ICPE approval.  necessary. Since then the market has not been revived. (soualigapost.com)

Since Luis in 1995, the wrecks in the lagoon have polluted and created accidents and incidents. Not to mention the visual and health nuisances. Every time there is a good grape not to do things. When are we going to get out of this administrative mediocrity which constantly challenges common sense. It is really shameful. At a time of a new start that everyone wants as harmonious as possible, Ladies and Gentlemen, elected officials stop wasting through information and advertising campaigns which only serve to justify the salaries of tourism agents and start with honor your word by finally doing what is necessary. We are still not able to properly accommodate “maritime” tourists.
We will support you in a constructive process but will criticize you in the current process.
I see the company working on the Dutch side every day, they do an excellent job, yes with some nuisance but limited in space and time. The result is there.
