Sint Maarten / Covid-19: a case of Indian variant detected!

The "Indian" double mutant variant, which is causing concern among specialists and health professionals, has been detected in a resident who is partly Dutch. Information confirmed by the Collective Prevention Service (CPS) of the Ministry of Public Health and Social Development of Sint Maarten.

Based on the latest information, the B.1.617 variant of SARS-CoV-2, said to be “Indian”, could be responsible for the resurgence of Covid-19 cases in India and Pakistan. As a preventive measure, the Dutch authorities have taken the decision to place India and Pakistan on the list of banned countries as of April 20, 2021.

In collaboration with local laboratories and the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM), samples were sent to the Netherlands for genotyping for Covid-19. The samples sent came from the last two weeks and the genotyping results show that 93%, or 38 cases detected come from the English variant), 5% of people infected by the New York variant and 1 person by the Indian variant.

It is clear that several variants circulate in part Dutch. The opportunity for local authorities to remind the population of the importance of respecting barrier gestures and thus avoid the spread of the virus! _AF
