Security: Police reinforcements sent to Martinique to stem the violence

Christophe Castaner and Annick Girardin, interior and overseas ministers, have decided to send additional resources to ensure the full security of Martinique, they said in a joint press release.

Despite a level of delinquency comparable to that of mainland France, Martinique is affected by a higher level of homicides and greater violence. In accordance with the combat waged by the government since the beginning of the mandate for the security of the French and Overseas, a reinforcement of police force was therefore decided for Martinique.

Thus, from March 2020, four judicial police officers and four staff already authorized within the BAC will develop the specific capacities of the national police to cope with this increasing use of weapons in this territory. These additional troops add to the reinforcement of 49 police and 10 soldiers from the national gendarmerie carried out since 2016.

These reinforcements announced by the ministers are part of a broader set of measures for the safety of Martiniquans:

- The construction of a new police station in Fort-de-France, a project with a total cost of 35,5 million euros which should be delivered in the coming months;

- The relaunch of the “weapons plan”, which made it possible to increase the number of weapons seized by 20% in 2019, and which will remain a priority for the State services in 2020;

- The sanctuary of the presence of a mobile gendarmerie squadron in Martinique.

In order to support the mobilization of the government, the ministers call for ever closer work with the municipal police forces in order to maintain a real security continuum. A partnership will thus soon be concluded in order to transmit the know-how of the national gendarmerie to the police dog brigade of the municipal police of Fort de France.

“Overseas security is a priority of my action, with Laurent Nuñez. We will not let violence take hold. We will not give up. These reinforcements are further proof of our unwavering commitment ”, says Christophe Castaner.

"These additional reinforcements will support the 686 police officers and 688 gendarmes on the spot who are already acting in favor of the protection of the inhabitants of Martinique. There is no fatality to insecurity in this territory, nor in any other. Whether in the Pacific, the Antilles, or the Indian Ocean, the demands of justice and prevention are at the heart of my action, ”says Annick Girardin.
