Sargassum: A strong risk of stranding in the coming days

0

The West Indies area is loaded with Sargassum rafts. They spread out between our coasts and 500 km offshore on the ocean. The current drifts and the formation of 2 gyres, one 100 km north of Barbados and another 80 km east of Dominica, maintain the threat of grounding on all the French islands. The risk of stranding for Saint-Martin is high with a confidence index of 4 out of 5.

According to the satellite image of June 13, the current coupled with the strong easterly wind will bring on the northern islands, the Sargassum which spread between 50 and 300 km east of the islands of Saint-Martin and of Saint-Barthélemy, in the coming days.

Trend for the next 2 months

The center of the Atlantic is empty of Sargassum, but the area between the West Indian archipelago and 500 km to the east still has a high concentration of rafts. After two months, these Sargassum should have run aground or be in the Caribbean. On the Amazon estuary side, the concentration of rafts is increasing. The current state of the drifts allows us to affirm that the Sargassum closest to the South American coast should not worry us, and pass into the Caribbean south of Saint Lucia. In addition, the retroflexion current, bringing the algae towards Africa is being set up. On the other hand, for the rafts further north, they are caught in weak currents and numerous meanders which bring them towards Barbados.

These rafts could interest us in the next 2 months or longer.
