For the first time, the national Ifrecor committee (French initiative for coral reefs) is meeting this week in Saint-Martin. “We meet every year: every other year in Paris and the other in Overseas. Coming to Saint-Martin was an act of support after Irma, ”explains Anne-Sophie Carnuccini, environment and biodiversity project manager at the French overseas department.

Monday, June 3, the first day of this working week which took place at the CCISM, was in fact largely devoted to the impacts of Irma.

During these annual seminars, Ifrecor tends to start with a day on a regional theme. Part of the morning was devoted to regional news with a point on the Sargassum: presentation of marine impacts, detection and forecasting, by Fabien Vedié of the DEAL of Martinique, as well as the presentation of the Waliwa project, an example of co-management of the marine space by Nicaise Gérard Monrose the mayor of Ste-Luce and Nicolas Pascal, NGO Blue Finance. Then began the post-Irma session during which were discussed not only the impacts of the cyclone on reefs, ponds and management wrecks, but also the presentation of the TYREX university project on risk prevention and the actions implemented by the various local actors including the Reserve for the restoration and rehabilitation of natural environments after an event of this magnitude.
